Reached, Ally Condie

This book was read for the 2013 Don't Let It End Reading Challenge hosted by Fiktshun. (Scroll down for the review in English, please.)

Até nisso a Ally Condie volta a surpreender-me.

Esta trilogia surpreendeu-me com o quanto me fez gostar dela.

My thoughts: This is not an easy collection of thoughts to write. Not because I didn't enjoy the book - on the contrary. I loved it. It made me think and I was left turning around little pieces of the story in my head for the past few days. I've had some difficulty in letting it go, because I was sad and so obsessed through so much of the story.

It's not a book that takes the predictable path. Ally Condie does manage to surprise me. Her writing and her storytelling are more slow paced, and the themes she chose to introduce this time are quite adequate in the trilogy. Society's obsession with health and a completely healthy status turns against itself. And one is left thinking about how easily science's wonders can be perverted into nefarious ends in the wrong hands.

I always suspected that the Rising could be no better than the Society. (It is said that "the road to hell is paved with good intentions", and how well this applies to the Rising.) It's almost funny, how true this was. I do believe the Rising's intentions were good, when it was created, but their message and purpose were perverted - I finished the book wondering if it was worth it, all that happened, in exchange for a new state of affairs that promises nothing, and leaves everything in the open. Such is human nature, and the way the author exposes this gives Reached a maturity I didn't expect.

The book does finish with a hint of hope. I was glad to see with my own eyes Cassia and Ky getting their little piece of the world, the one they tried to create from their dreams, the one they fought for and suffered for, in order to be together. They're the one constant throughout the books, and there's no one who deserves more an happy ending.

On the opposite side of this, there are characters who dream and wish for everything, but can't get what they want. And their paths are filled with a sense of loss of innocence, of grief and exhaustion at everything life throws at them. I speak of Indie, and Lei, and Xander (I kinda feel bad for thrashing him so much in Crossed, but really, his behaviour was so suspicious then). Two of them have the hope of something better (I think Ally exagerated that), but Indie's ending is so sad. I had warmed up to her and her temper, and I was convinced she was going to be big.

This trilogy surprised me with how much I loved it. It has moments that make you think, I liked the style, the themes and the way Ally Condie created the story, and how she kept me captivated and anxious to find out what was going to happen to these characters during the three books.

      Boas leituras! ;)
